Floral necklace with pearls & turquoises in gold, Great Britain circa 1900
Pieces of jewellery in yellow gold, set all over with seed pearls, were particularly popular in Great Britain around 1900. Especially popular were the so-called "necklets", delicate necklaces. This is also proven by the illustrated advertisement of the London firm Mappin & Webb from 1900 (see last picture). It states that due to the great demand for pearls, the prices for such products had risen. The present necklace adds turquoise to the pearls, which were also very popular in the Victorian era. In addition to their bright colour, they were popular because they had the same meaning in the language of jewels as the forget-me-not had in the language of flowers. The proximity of the colour of turquoise to the forget-me-not is also used here to add colour to the delicate flower garland and subtly charge it with meaning. Because the garland and the chain are made to move, the necklace always lies perfectly against the décolleté. The necklace is in excellent condition. The pearls shimmer with a fresh luster and the fine gold plating shines as velvety as on the first day - obviously the piece was always held in high esteem. The necklace is made of the typical British alloy of fifteen carat gold (corresponding to a fineness of 625/000). We encounter this alloy in many Victorian and Edwardian jewels, but it was only used until 1932, after which its use was banned. We discovered the necklace in London.
