Vintage pendant with blue tourmaline in gold, around 1975

Tourmaline is a gemstone that is able to captivate almost all gemstone lovers with its diverse play of colors. From blue to yellow, pink and green, almost all colors occur. Tourmalines are called differently depending on their colors, whereby the red varieties are also called rubellites, the blue specimens are traded as indigolites. Its wonderful radiance has made tourmaline one of the most highly valued gemstones since ancient times. The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word thuramali ("තුරමලි") or thoramalli ("තෝරමල්ලි"), which was commonly used for colorful gemstones found in Sri Lanka. The name was first recorded in writing for Europe in 1707, or in 1711 under the name Chrysolithus Turmale. Larger quantities have been exported from Sri Lanka to Europe only since the middle of the 18th century. At that time the Dutch East India Company had practically a trade monopoly for tourmalines. A wonderful tourmaline also forms the center of this pendant from the 1970s. The natural gemstone, an indigolite, displays an impressive deep blue color. The hand-forged pendant made of high karat gold shows the typical design language of the decade and offers the gemstone an optimal stage to unfold its natural beauty.
