day and night

Sparkling Art Deco ring with sapphires & diamonds, around 1930

The perpetual alternation of day and night is a symbol of the cycle of life that has been sung about since antiquity. In the Art Deco ring presented here, this idea of opposites belonging together is captured in a piece of jewellery. The platinum ring features deep blue sapphires and diamonds in historic cuts. The framing of the sapphires by the sparkling diamonds creates a contrast that really brings out the inherent life of both elements: the diamonds shine starry-bright and the sapphires seduce with their dark blue. In keeping with Art Deco taste, the design is a variation of geometric shapes. The ring head is rectangular and slightly stepped; the end points of the rectangle line up with the three sapphires to set the two largest diamonds in the design. Centrally between them, at the point of attachment to the ring rail, is a triangle of platinum and diamonds. It looks as if fabric has been folded over here, and in a subtle way the ring rail and the showpiece come together to form a single unit. The ring was made around 1930. We discovered it in London.
