Sparkling Art Deco diamond bracelet with matching ring, Paris circa 1930
In Germany we know Paris as the city of love, but in France the metropolis on the Seine is known as the city of light: "La ville lumière". The origin of this designation lies in the 19th century, when Paris was the first city on the continent to be illuminated by the glow of the then novel gas lanterns. By around 1830, the glow of the arcades at night was legendary throughout Europe. And the city has been glowing and attracting visitors ever since. From the City of Lights has reached us the present set, consisting of a diamond-studded platinum bracelet with matching ring. The light-bright goldsmith's work rescues the glamour of the late twenties into our epoch and illustrates the form principles of Art Deco, which were so modern at the time: A total of six similarly designed links of platinum, set with a total of 222 diamonds, form the moveably mounted bracelet. In each link, a larger old-cut diamond is the focal point of a geometric structure of diamond-set bands that converge on the center stone in a serrated pattern or frame it in parallel lines, not without creating striking shadow gaps. Double diamond links connect these rectangular elements to form a flowing whole, with one of these links forming an almost invisible clasp. The matching ring, with its ring head and shoulders of platinum and a rail of bright, high-carat white gold, also follows this formal principle. Here, too, four symmetrical areas around the center stone are effectively left free to artfully shade the incoming light that is otherwise so richly reflected from all millegriffes-embellished surfaces. Half a carat of fine old-cut diamonds are set on the ring, so that the set presents a total of about 4.88 carats of fine old-cut diamonds, divided among 251 stones. Detailed appraisals on the ring and bracelet have confirmed the quality of the materials and come with the set.
With the invention of gaslight and then electric light at the end of the 19th century, glistening brightness suddenly filled the ballrooms of Europe. No longer dark, yellow candlelight, but the white glow of hundreds of lamps made the ladies' jewellery shine and glitter as never before. No wonder that as a result of these developments, a new fashion also emerged: white jewels made of diamonds and silver responded to the new lighting conditions and replaced the previous more colourful designs. In general, jewellery was increasingly richly set with sparkling gems to create an ever more luxurious and rich appearance. At the great balls in Paris, London and St. Petersburg, ever more magnificent diamond necklaces were presented, as well as tiaras, brooches and rings, all dreams in white diamonds. The name of the era, the Belle Époque, still indicates the goal of the period: To shine in beauty. But the fashion for white jewellery also remained current in the following decades, right up to the Art Déco of the 1920s. Only the materials of the settings changed. The rapidly tarnishing silver was first replaced by platinum settings and later by jewellery made entirely of platinum or the white gold developed shortly before the world war.
