Geometric lavallière necklace with diamonds, c. 1920 & later
In the early 20th century, a new form of necklace conquered Europe in only a short time. Especially younger ladies, who liked to keep up with the more avant-garde changes in fashion, liked to adorn themselves with it: We are talking about the so-called Lavallière, also called Negligé-Collier. Two pendulums of different lengths are attached to a decorative element and form the showpiece of the necklace. While most of these necklaces were created in the first decade of the century and were still committed to the floral, playful formal language of the Belle Époque, more austere designs were also created that paid homage to the geometric aesthetics of the Art Deco. The present necklace is an example of the latter and is composed of graphic elements and fine bars. Diamonds in historic old and rose cuts set the three main elements and the bars of this delicate piece. A hallmark suggests that the permanently mounted antique pendant was made in Vienna before 1922. Several decades later, the Venetian chain was added, its angular links taking up and continuing the geometric play of forms of the central section. An additional rhodium plating applied to both elements at that time gives them a uniform white shine.
