The venerable guild of the cloth merchants

Golden cufflinks with coat of arms of the London "Company of Drapers", dated 1964

The City of London is by far the smallest administrative district of the British metropolis. Today, only about 8,000 people live here on an area of 2.90 square kilometres. As a historical and economic center of the metropolis, the City has retained an importance that can hardly be overestimated and many ancient institutions are located here today. These include the so-called "Livery Companies" (named after the traditional clothing, the livery), the English professional associations and guilds. The first companies were founded in the high Middle Ages and were recognized by the respective king. Today their task is mainly of a charitable nature and there are still 110 Livery Companies, whose ranking has been fixed for centuries. In third place in this ranking is the venerable Guild of Wool and Cloth Merchants, founded in 1364, whose coat of arms we see on these cufflinks. As the first guild of London the coat of arms was already granted to it in 1438 by a royal privilege. Since that time the coat of arms shows three clouds crowned by triple crowns. Our cufflinks were created to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the Cloth Merchants Guild, as shown by the engraved dates 1364-1964. The gold buttons were made by the goldsmiths Cropp & Farr. British tradition and style make the buttons a dignified men's accessory.
