Large antique garnet brooch in the shape of a butterfly, around 1880
The butterfly here impresses with its magnificent size and many dark red garnets, which line up stone to stone in a pavé setting to give a shiny and sparkling impression. The stones are set in gold-plated tombac, typical of the period. However, due to the settings, which are hardly visible from the front, hardly any flashing metal disturbs the glow of the garnets, and thus the Bohemian stones, which have become rare today, are in the foreground of the design. The garnets thus shine in a mysterious, dark red. We discovered the butterfly here in Berlin, where it spent the last years of its life. It was most probably created in Bohemia, as the colour and quality of its garnets suggest. As the jewellery catalogue of the American company E. V. Roddin & Co. from 1888 proves (see last picture, top right), butterflies made of Bohemian stones were also popular overseas. A jewel of the air - wonderfully preserved and full of life as on the first day!
The garnet, as a dark and mysterious stone has always been the object of desire of people of all ages. Garnet jewelry fits almost every occasion and is therefore not only worn in the evening or on festive occasions. Most commonly used are the dark red pyrope garnets, which we also find in the piece of jewellery presented here. These gemstones come from localities in Bohemia and delight with their deep and rich color. Since the garnet as a gemstone is relatively insensitive, once acquired garnet jewelry can be a companion for a lifetime.
