Wheat Sheaf

Large brooch with seed pearls in gold, Great Britain circa 1890

The Belle Époque, the beautiful era, was a time in modern history marked by new wealth, luxury and lust for life. So what fits better into this time than an ear of corn? Since Roman times, it has been considered a symbol of prosperity. Depictions of Abundantia, the deified personification of abundance, often showed her with ears of grain and a cornucopia in which coins were mixed with grain. The famous 1856 Dictionary of Victorian Floral Language by Anna Burke also lists wheat as a symbol of prosperity. In keeping not only with this theme, but also with the natural appearance of the ear of corn, the brooch here is done in gold and pearls. The natural small pearls, so-called seed pearls, are halved so that they do not protrude far above the surface of the brooch. They are held by finely grained settings that are barely visible to the naked eye. We were able to discover the large brooch in London. According to its design, workmanship and choice of materials, it was made in Great Britain towards the end of the 19th century.
