Large gold brooch with amethysts & natural pearls, England circa 1905
This brooch from shortly after the turn of the last century is playful and graceful. The openwork jewel of filigree gold bars presents leaf ornaments and cute blossoms that seem to dance on delicate bars. Two delicate purple amethysts and gorgeous natural pearls add their pastel lavender color play to the piece, creating a harmonious impression. Old gold reinforcements on the back are evidence that the piece was valued and lovingly restored in the past. Thus, the brooch enchants at first sight and takes us back to the heyday of the British Empire, to the years around 1905, the reign of Edward VII, who as Queen Victoria's son ruled the country only briefly. A charming and cheerful piece of jewellery with delicate colours that we discovered in London.
England, around 1900: The Empire is at the height of its power. The old Queen Victoria has brought peace and economic success to her subjects. Luxury and wealth reach ever broader strata in London. The new style of Art Nouveau, or Style Liberty, as it is known in England, originating in France, is eagerly adopted, as it reflects everything that is currently in fashion: lightness, elegance and a touch of cosmopolitanism.
