In the eye of the dragon

Large silver, gold & pearl earrings, China circa 1900 & later

China, the land of smiles, with its millennia-old culture has always fascinated Europe. It is impossible to imagine European art of the last centuries without chinoiseries, Chinese arts and crafts, especially porcelain, were a status symbol at all European courts and a sign of discriminating taste. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, when long-distance travel became easier, trade relations could be expanded and the Middle Kingdom thus moved closer, genuine Chinese arts and crafts also became affordable for the middle classes. This pair of earrings, made in our workshop from a pair of large Chinese silver buttons, should be seen in this context. Our goldsmith added ear hoops of high karat gold and attached a drop pearl to each. This has resulted in impressively large earrings. On the round sides of the earrings we see the heads of dragons in relief. In China, the dragon also symbolizes wealth, but above all it stands for luck, for goodness and intelligence. Thus, in contrast to the dragons of the Western world, the Chinese dragon is regarded as a good being. The Chinese word for this mythical creature is Lóng (Chinese 龍, simplified 龙). The typical dragons of Chinese mythology have the body of a snake, a lion's mane and four legs. Thus, a pair of unusual earrings was created, whose new wearer we wish all the positive associations for which the Chinese dragon advocates.
