Déco Lepidopterous

Large silver & agate butterfly brooch, Czechoslovakia circa 1935

Large and strikingly beautiful shows the present brooch from the era of Art Deco. Five polished agates have come together to form a large butterfly, which with a wingspan of about nine centimeters is an unmissable eye-catcher. Jewelry in the form of insects already enjoyed great popularity at the end of the 19th century: butterflies, dragonflies, but also bees and flies were allowed to settle in jewel form on the shoulders and décolletés of ladies, where they caused a great stir and could stimulate conversation as so-called "conversation pieces". The turbulent years between the world wars also gave the figurative jewelry further periods of splendor. The jewellery had to be large and eye-catching, and there were hardly any limits to the goldsmiths' imagination. The present, very large butterfly fulfills these requirements excellently. The large agate discs of the wings are translucent and show fine natural color bands. Especially successful is the mounting on the back made of sawn silver. Here the metal is designed so that it is naturalistic structure of the butterfly wings visible through the agates and creates a wonderful plastic effect. As its hallmark reveals, the decorative butterfly was made in Czechoslovakia in the years between 1929 and 1941. From there it made its way to Westphalia, until it finally found its way to us in Berlin. We are curious where its next landing point will be.
