Large diamond, demantoid & natural pearl pendant, circa 1880
The most beautiful messengers of spring, of the new beginning of life in woods and meadows, are surely the many small white blossoms that are the first to pierce the snow or peek out from under trees and bushes. Whether it's snowdrops, wood anemones or snowdrops: the fresh green and white after the long months of dreary brown and grey fills the heart and makes you happy. This large pendant shows that our ancestors were already touched by this colour. The magnificent work presents warm white shimmering natural pearls, sparkling rose-cut diamonds and green shining demantoids, a particularly precious variety of garnet found in the Urals. All these treasures are set in silver or gold: For in order to achieve a spring-fresh, white impression, the executing goldsmith has set diamonds and pearls in silver, while the colored stones are set in gold - a quite common technique until the early 20th century, since for a long time neither white gold nor platinum were available and one wanted to support the white brilliance of the diamonds as optimally as possible in this way. The large pendant was created in the years around 1880: The forms of the elegant tendrils reveal the goldsmith's training in historical models, as they were considered exemplary during historicism. Renaissance jewellery, for example, often shows very similar forms, and the compact, powerful basic shape of the pendant, which is almost square in outline, can also be modelled on these. The pendant is in first class condition. We were able to acquire it at Lake Constance and were immediately thrilled.
