Smoke on the Water
Large gold pendant with smoky quartz, Vienna circa 1940
Quartz is a mineral that occurs in many color varieties. Pure quartz is completely transparent and colorless and, when it develops well-formed crystals, is called rock crystal. Often quartz is milky cloudy due to microscopic inclusions of liquids and gases (milky quartz) and appears grey when grown into the rock. By embedded iron ions the quartz shows a violet colouring and is called amethyst. The yellow to orange-brown colored citrine, the leek-green prasiolite and the brown-gray smoky quartz (morion) also belong to the popular forms of quartz as gemstones. An impressively beautiful smoky quartz of mysterious and appealing color forms the setting and focal point of this circa 1940 pendant. The gemstone is designed in a cushion facet cut with a large panel. The hand-forged setting of yellow gold swags is adorned with balls of rose gold and surrounds the stone like a baroque frame. Due to its stampings in the form of the so-called "Rosskopf mark", we are able to locate the piece of jewellery to Vienna. A beautiful hand-forged piece of jewellery, whose fine workmanship and selected materials are convincing.
