The moon has risen
Large rose gold ring with large moonstone and old cut diamonds, circa 1910
This ring from around 1910 offers an impressive sight, with a large moonstone shining in its centre in a mysterious shimmering white. The cabochon-cut gemstone shows particularly well the silky sheen that is reminiscent of the light of the moon and has given the stone its name. Moonstones, which like this gemstone come from Ceylon, have been particularly prized for this shimmering effect since time immemorial. The large moonstone is held in a setting of 18-karat rose gold, the color of which harmonizes beautifully with its shimmer. A total of six old-cut diamonds enrich the exquisite design on the platinum ring shoulders and add a subtle sparkle to the shimmering ring. The openwork undercrossing, as well as the simple ring rail, also allows light to fall into the moonstone from below. Thus, the stone shows a different image with every movement and unfolds an almost hypnotic pull. The piece of jewellery was probably created in British Ceylon, the place where the large moonstone was found. We discovered the large ring in Frankfurt am Main.
The moonstone is characterized above all by its adularescence, a bluish-white shimmer that glides over the entire surface of the stone when it is moved. Moonstones that come from the classic country of origin, Sri Lanka, are usually almost completely transparent to milky-white and have a delicate bluish luster. Stones from India, on the other hand, show a cloudy undertone that plays into orange.
