Handmade "vegetable" pendant/brooch in gold, around 1955

The type of "vegetable" jewellery emerged during the Art Deco period in Germany and probably developed from Art Nouveau designs in southern Germany and Austria, such as those by Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstätten, which often featured gold and silver leaves and tendrils. This type of jewellery got its name from this vegetal decoration, from whose foliage pearls and precious stones emerge like ripe fruit. This motif also characterises the present piece of jewellery, which we discovered in Cologne. From expressive leaves sprout precious blossoms set with a diamond, a pearl, a sapphire and a shimmering opal. This central motif, as well as its border, impress with their elaborate workmanship: the small spheres that form the pattern of the surface have each been applied separately and individually by hand to the piece of jewellery. This technique of granulation, an ancient process, requires the greatest skill on the part of the goldsmith in order not to melt the small spheres of gold. As a reward for the great effort, however, the piece of jewelry receives a particularly fascinating surface shape. Mostly such "vegetable" pieces of jewellery are found in the form of rings; more rarely they are worn as brooches and pendants like the present handmade piece, which we date to the early post-war period due to the diamond cuts and the use of cultured pearls.
