Treasury of the Maharajas

High-quality gold ring with sapphire & enamel, India, 2nd half of the 20th century.

India - the name of the country stands for colorful splendor. After England had seized the subcontinent from the 17th century onwards, wondrous treasures reached Europe on board the great sailing ships. Especially the magnificent jewellery of the Mughal princes was collected with admiration. In Mughal jewellery, Islamic influences from Persia and Central Asia merge with Hindu motifs and inspire with their wonderful colourfulness. Among the favoured Indian material combinations was the combination of different coloured enamels and precious stones in high-carat, almost pure gold. The present ring is a high-quality example of traditional Indian jewellery. At its centre, the jewel presents a large spahir in an oval cabochon cut. The gemstone is cross-fingered and has a wonderful medium blue color. The sapphire is held in place by a shell of high-carat yellow gold. Its underside, like the ring band, features finely enameled leaf designs in red and green against a white background. This technique, known as meenakari, can already be found in the jewellery of the Mughal period and is a characteristic feature of Indian jewellery. The ring was probably made in the 2nd half of the 20th century and shows us why the combination of materials described above was so popular for centuries. It is excellently preserved and came to us from Amsterdam. Perfectly crafted, the piece of jewellery pays homage to the treasures of the land of the Maharajas.
