Sirene del Mare

Vintage earrings with translucent enamel & diamonds, Italy circa 1985

The large earrings here, made of gold, diamonds and translucent enamel, so-called plique-à-jour, take us to Italy, to a carefree life under a bright sun. The high-carat gold, from which the earrings are made, shines warmly and nobly. Between its fine bars are areas of blue enamel. They let the light through, so they shine freshly and remind us of the waves of the sea or the scales on a mermaid's dress. Finally, a row of diamonds, white as the spray on the water and together weighing about half a carat, further adorns the two earrings. The large, sculpturally designed earrings were created in Italy, as the hallmarking reveals. They hold securely on the ear, thanks to a white gold folding ear hoop in each. Their cheerful design and large size let us date the pair to around 1985. We were able to acquire the pair from a private collection in West Germany.

All times have their fashions, and all fashions have their effects also on the field of jewellery. Jewellery of the 1980s is an often beautiful, and always impressive testimony of a time of optimism and abundance: The oil crisis seemed to be over, Wall Street was flourishing - People sipped cocktails and paid with credit cards, everything seemed possible. At the same time, a new image of women emerged. Self-confident and tough, asserting herself at work, in the face of men, successful, with broad shoulder pads and high heels, she adorned herself with rings, necklaces and brooches in hitherto unfamiliar dimensions, with reflective surfaces of yellow gold and rich trimmings of colored gemstones. A lot of costume jewelry was created, because executed in real materials the jewelry would have been unaffordable for most women, so large and heavy they should appear. But real jewellery was of course also produced in large numbers in the USA and Europe.
