High quality vintage pearl necklace made of Akoya pearls with gold clasp, around 1960
It was a great sensation when the Japanese entrepreneur Mikimoto succeeded in the early 1920s to grow saltwater pearls on a large scale. Until then, pearl necklaces had to be made from naturally grown pearls, which were about as expensive as diamonds of the same size. It was not until the invention of the cultured pearl that pearl jewellery became affordable and sparked a huge fashion that has lasted to this day. This particularly beautiful pearl necklace is made of such Akoya pearls with a light golden luster and a diameter of about 7.6 millimeters. A clasp made of high-carat yellow gold makes the pearl necklace effectively wearable. The pearls are 51 fine cultured pearls. Newly strung and knotted by hand, a necklace of Japanese pearls like this belongs in every jewelry box.
A treasure from the depths of the sea - In many cultures around the world, the pearl has a deeply symbolic character. In China they are a symbol of wealth, wisdom and dignity; in Japan they signify good luck, in India the abundance of children. Even among the ancient Greeks and Romans, pearls were highly coveted as pieces of jewellery: the Greek term "margarita" was also used, as it were, to refer to the beloved, a term that has survived to this day in the name Margarete. The classic pearl necklace must not be missing from a lady's jewellery box
