Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
High quality vintage white gold ring with 2,25 ct sapphire & diamonds, around 1970
The sapphire in the centre of this ring glows sky blue. Transparent, almost completely clear, with only a few natural inclusions, the stone shimmers in various shades, brought to life again and again by the play of light on the facets. Four white gold lobes hold the sapphire in place. Sixteen white diamonds surround it in a sparkling frame, set slightly behind the sapphire as if they were carrying it upwards with their light. The ring in question here was created in the years around 1970. At that time, a new form of the classic entourage ring was fashionable, that is, the ring shape in which a large central stone is framed by a wreath of diamonds. These new rings were called ballerina rings, because the surrounding diamonds were no longer evenly spaced around the center stone, but instead formed a swinging line reminiscent of a fanned-out tutu seen from above. The swaying framing of brilliant and trapezoid cut diamonds around the sapphire is close to this almost musically inspired ring shape. To the sides, where the ring band joins, the trapezoid-cut diamonds are arranged. They protrude above the brilliant-cut diamonds, to the sides, but also in the direction of the sapphire: it is a very delicate staggering, but one that gives the ring a power and beauty all of its own. We have had an independent appraisal done on the ring that has confirmed the quality and value of the materials used. It comes with the ring in first class condition. On the type of ballerina ring, see David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, p. 444f.
