Oh my deer!

Vintage cufflinks with silver deer, Blachian, around 1960

"Throughout the ages and in the diversity of cultures, goldsmithing and silversmithing have given us unique works of beauty. In museums and private collections, these gems still bear witness to the rich culture of times gone by. Blachian Antique Jewelry (BAS) conveys the beauty of these ancient masterpieces in true-to-the-original and true-to-the-work renditions, thus giving noble pleasure. BAS is thus a mediator between the works of art of our ancestors and the people of the present time. BAS deepens and enriches the culture of the human soul." With these words the gold and silversmiths Blachian-Antik-Schmuck describe themselves in a sales catalog of the 1950s. Founded as early as 1742 by Franz Eligius Blachian in Traunstein, the company is dedicated to works from the past. Mostly cast in silver, more rarely in gold, the company produced jewelry whose individual forms were taken from works of art from different eras. Thus, Blachian's repertoire includes Renaissance elements as well as Romanesque and Gothic forms and those from the Migration Period. However, the largest part of Blachian's jewelry creations is made up of Baroque forms. The pair of cufflinks here, created in the mid-20th century, depicts leaping deer whose form references Baroque models. The silver is effectively patinated, so that the cushion-shaped showpieces with the applied little animals appear even more vivid. Our pair of cufflinks came to us unworn from the estate of a Munich jeweler.
