A little white flower I give to thee
Ornamental flower ring with natural pearl & diamonds, around 1910
The ring presented here is a delicate composition about the common sound of different white tones. It seems as if a small flower, a daisy perhaps, had been freshly plucked from the meadow and taken in hand to spread freshness and beauty for a moment. A fine oriental pearl, formed by an oyster without human intervention, is surrounded by a frame of eight old-cut diamonds as if by petals. Their soft, bright sparkle creates a beautiful transition from the cream tone of the pearl to the warm gold tone of the ring band. The stones are set à jour in platinum, which wonderfully enhances the brilliance of the diamonds. The precious platinum ring lives entirely from the natural beauty of its precious materials. It was created in the early years of the 20th century, probably in England. We discovered it in London.
The second volume of the "Bildungsbibliothek für Teutschlands Töchter", published in Augsburg in 1834, contains a chapter on the so-called language of flowers. This flower language was one of the common means of non-verbal communication in the Biedermeier era and much of it has survived in proverbs and idioms. At the time, young lovers in particular could not clearly express what they were thinking, and could not clearly express their affection and dislike verbally. Flower language therefore became an important means of communication without words. Under the keyword "daisy", the meaning of this flower can now also be read in the volume. The meadow plant stands for gentleness, joyful youth, pure and quiet joy, as well as for modesty and love.
