Precious contrasts

Pretty Art Deco ring with sapphires & diamonds, Netherlands circa 1930

Art Deco jewellery is known for its bold geometric shapes. But the goldsmiths also succeeded in creating entirely modern designs through the skilful use of materials. One of the tricks of the Art Deco jewellery designers was to use previously unknown combinations of precious stones, often in unusual cuts. Here, deep blue sapphires were contrasted with white diamonds. The largest sapphire in an oval facet cut is the focal point of the design. Fine shadow gaps on the face of the ring radiate from the central sapphire, and the resulting platinum surfaces each hold two old-cut diamonds. A total of twelve white old-cut diamonds of approx. 0.38 ct together thus form fine points of brilliance. They blend visually with the white platinum, which is applied to the gold ring on the face in a manner typical of the period. Fine bands of smaller sapphires cut into the ring lend it an exciting tension. The ring is beautifully preserved and came to us from Amsterdam.

Calibrated stones are those whose cuts have been specially calculated to fill certain areas. This technique emerged in the years around 1910, but reached its peak in Art Deco designs. Because it is so labor-intensive and complicated to master, it is rarely used today.
