The beauty of geometry

Delicate diamond, ruby & pearl Art Nouveau necklace, circa 1905

It is a refined play of shapes that the necklace here performs before our eyes. The basic shape of the central pendant is the circle, made of rubies and glowing red. Two bows hold it, like a clasp, and find their counterpart in a movably attached, genuine natural pearl. A single, rectangular ruby marks the top of the design. This is where the delicate platinum chains come in, each of which is joined by a pearl to turn the pendant into a necklace. The pendant was created in the years shortly after 1900. Art Nouveau, which had started in France with floral forms, had become a more graphic, geometric new style in Germany and Austria. Many new ornaments were created, but here too the reference to the model from animate nature was rarely lost: many designs combine forms of geometry with influences from the realm of nature such as Victor Horta's famous whip stroke ("Coup de Fouet"). The pendant here also shows both poles of Art Nouveau in one, creating a beautiful tension in the design. The jewel is made of high-carat gold, to which an additional layer of platinum gives a cool, elegant impression. The intense pink-red of the rubies can shine even more intensely against this backdrop; also in contrast to the cool shimmering pearls and the sparkling diamonds. The necklace bears no hallmarks. Based on the combination of organic and geometric influences, we believe it is likely to have originated in Germany or another country in Central Europe. It is very well preserved and found its way to us in London.
