Not only for the opera house

Classic pearl necklace in opera length with gold and diamond clasp, around 1990

Whoever wanted to own a pearl necklace in the old days often had to wait a very long time, because pearls were still lucky finds of the pearl divers at that time: "Pearls, otherwise sometimes just as precious as diamonds, are more modest in their effect as jewellery than these, we would almost like to say more poetic. It often takes a long time of collecting before uniform pearls are brought together to form a necklace. It was five years, for instance, before the beautiful pearl necklace which the Emperor Frederick, as Crown Prince, presented to his young consort as a wedding gift, was finished." (Der Bazar. Illustrirte Damen-Zeitung, 40th year 1894, No. 6, p. 57). It was not until the early 1920s that cultured pearls were available on the European market, and they made it possible for even very long pearl necklaces to be more easily available from then on. It was not until the invention of the cultured pearl and its triumphal march in the 20th century that pearl jewellery became the classic it is today. However, pearl necklaces still remained precious, and so it goes without saying that they are often equipped with high-quality clasps. This pearl necklace in opera length can be worn once or twice around the neck. The long strand of 103 individually knotted cream-white pearls is held by a round, brushed clasp of yellow gold, in which small diamonds are set. The catch disappears for the most part in this clasp, so that it also looks decorative when worn with an updo. We have had the chain rewound and knotted so that it can be worn without worry.
