Classic vintage Entourage ring with ruby & diamonds in gold, circa 1980

The ring here is designed as a classic entourage ring, with ten diamonds surrounding a beautiful dark red ruby like the leaves of a precious flower. The gemstone settings are made of white gold, while the rest of the ring is forged from warmly shimmering yellow gold. Such designs have long been known in jewelry history and are called entourage rings, from French "entourage" for escort. Rings in which a larger center stone is surrounded by diamonds were first in vogue in the 1600s - and have been an integral part of the jewelry world ever since. In the second half of the 20th century, they became particularly popular once again. Kate Middleton, for example, wears a ring with a very similar design and a sapphire in the middle, which Princess Diana chose as her engagement ring from the then court jeweler Garrard in 1981. The ring came to us from Munich and, according to the stamping, was made in Germany, probably in the years around 1980.

The ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Corundum can be found in almost all colors of the rainbow, even completely colorless stones are among them. But while all these stones can also be addressed as sapphires, only the magnificently red stones of this mineral genus are rubies. Rubies have extraordinary significance in the world of jewelry. In the 19th century, its brilliant color was often associated with love and passion: "Rubies are especially suitable for young lovers [...] In general, it is considered the emblem of the most passionate and ardent love" (Bazar. Illustrirte Damen-Zeitung, November 1886).
