Classic vintage ring made of gold & amber, around 1970
Amber is one of the oldest jewellery materials of mankind and was already traded over long distances thousands of years ago. Via the so-called Amber Road, the fossil tree resin reached from the shores of the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean and beyond. Thus, even in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamen a scarab made of amber from the Baltic was found. Before the Second World War Germany was the centre of the European amber jewellery production. The most important deposits of the fossil tree resin were located in former East Prussia; amber was even mined here in open-cast mines. Particularly innovative was the Staatliche Bernsteinmanufaktur (SBM), founded in Königsberg in 1926, where many renowned designers worked until its demise in 1945. This impressively large gold ring, which presents a clarified amber in the form of an oval cabochon, is also part of this succession. The amber displays a pretty inclusion pattern of so called sunbursts that beautifully enliven its cognac color. A plain gold setting makes the amber wearable as a ring.
Amber, the gold of the Baltic Sea, was already in the Stone Age a popular material to decorate and has lost nothing of its appeal to this day. The wide range of its always warm coloration and its good workability have created wonderful pieces of jewelry, none of which is like the other.
