The round has to go into the square

Classic vintage white gold ring with 0.52 ct diamond solitaire, circa 1965

The diamond solitaire is one of the most beautiful forms a ring can take. Concentrated on a single, large gemstone, it presents us with sparkling light. Usually set in a simple ring band, it does not interfere with everyday life, can be combined well with many other pieces of jewellery and is at the same time comfortable to wear. In the case of this vintage ring, a sparkling brilliant cut diamond has become the center of the composition. The gemstone weighs approximately 0.52 carats and is set in a white gold carreau setting, which beautifully highlights the size of the stone with its bright color. The rest of the ring is also made of 14-karat white gold, with three more brilliant-cut diamonds set into each of the shoulders. The smaller stones set additional highlights, but without stealing the show from the centre stone. The workmanship, the material and the cut of the diamonds allow us to date this ring to the years around 1965. It came to us from Munich.

The symbolic act of giving a diamond ring as an engagement gift is first documented in 1477 and can be traced back to Mary of Burgundy, who received a diamond ring as a promise of fidelity from her future husband, Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. Wearing a ring as a sign of commitment on the third finger of the left hand, on the other hand, was already the custom of the ancient Egyptians, who believed that the "love vein" connected the heart to the left ring finger.
