Precious art nouveau brooch with old cut diamonds in gold & platinum, around 1905

Art Nouveau is not just Art Nouveau - even within this movement, which from the late years of the 19th century had set itself the goal of renewing the arts, there were variations. Thus, in the late 1890s and especially at the beginning of the 20th century, floral, asymmetrical designs were still preferred, which were mainly influenced from France. However, from around 1905 onwards, a new development began to emerge, towards symmetrical, mostly very graphic designs, which at best still expressed their floral references in an abstract way. The present brooch is a child of this development and presents itself as a symmetrical composition. Whether the curved bars set with diamond roses are plant tendrils wetted with dew, or whether the large old-cut diamonds represent blossoms, this is entirely up to the viewer's imagination. One diamond emerges from the top centre of the brooch, three more from the bottom, whereby the central diamond is suspended in a movable manner and trembles with every movement, spraying brilliant sparks. The brooch is topped with white platinum, making it quite in keeping with its time. Only the diamonds are somewhat anachronistic: except for the moveably suspended one, they are, judging by their cut, from even older pieces of jewellery. Presumably a lady once took a piece of jewellery that had become unfashionable to a goldsmith to have a piece made from the stones in the style of her time - just as was customary for centuries.
