Sparkling pavement

Precious rose gold ring with brown diamonds, Italy circa 2000

While some pieces of jewellery score points with their exciting designs, there are other designs whose charm and luxury arise precisely from the reduction of the creative means. This ring, created around the turn of the millennium, is one such piece: its clear formal language, coupled with true finesse, is immediately convincing. At the centre of the ring are forty brilliant-cut diamonds in a natural dark champagne colour, set close together in the rose gold of the wide band ring. The type of diamond setting used here is called a "pavé setting": a large number of similar gemstones are set very close to each other and thus literally cover the surface of the precious metal. The word pavé comes from the French and can be translated as "paving". Indeed, the surfaces of jewels with pavé settings are reminiscent of shimmering streets or paths paved with the finest diamonds instead of granite stones. The aim of this elaborate technique is to focus the viewer's attention entirely on the continuous surface of sparkling diamonds. And this ring, which came to us from southern Germany, succeeds wonderfully! While the diamonds set on the outer side show natural brown tones, thirty further brilliant-cut diamonds are set in the side parts of the ring. These smaller brilliant diamonds are brilliant white and make the precious ring alluringly beautiful. In total, there are approximately 2.70 ct of diamonds set in this piece of jewelry. An Italian gold stamp reveals that the ring was made in Italy, presumably in one of the fine manufactories in the rich north of the country.
