Victorian Memories

Strong silver chain with medallion pendant, Birmingham 1882

We spotted this gorgeous large medallion pendant necklace in London: a decorative, strong chain of interlocking silver links holds a large medallion. Its oval show cap is adorned with floral engravings that look like a glimpse of a romantic garden. The elaborate medallion necklace follows a fashion that originated around 1860 and would remain popular until the end of the century: The wide chain is relatively short and carries a large medallion, which in turn hangs from a few links of the same chain pattern. The chain and pendant are connected by a large spring ring, which is worn on the chest as a connecting ornament. Cf. for example David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, p. 160f. The necklace and medallion in question here were made in Queen Victoria's Britain in 1882 - as indicated by the full hallmark of the Assay Office in Birmingham with the year letter for that very year. They are made of silver and two frames have survived inside, one even with its original glass. Because that's what this is all about: To create a place to keep cherished souvenirs, perhaps a lock of hair, a letter or a photograph, safe forever at the heart.
