Victorian love symbol

Long antique gold earrings with knot motif, Great Britain circa 1875

The knot motif has a long tradition in cultural history. Even among the Celts, an elaborate knot was considered a symbol of the bond between two people. But even in Victorian times, this tradition was maintained, albeit modified: A wide variety of knot motifs were dubbed "lover's knot," love knots, and added a subtle symbolic layer to all manner of jewelry. The present pair of earrings also makes the knot the main motif. Three intertwined gold bands form the centerpiece of the three-piece earrings, reminiscent of a flower. A shiny gold ball occupies each of their centers. Below each is suspended an amphora-shaped element, which gently swings when moved. Since the earrings are hollow, they are pleasantly light to wear. Pendulum-shaped, long gold earrings like these were particularly favored by fashion in the 1870s. However, it was to be only a short time before they went completely out of fashion in favor of smaller stud earrings or even naked earlobes - and so they soon disappeared back into the jewelry box. Possibly for this reason, the pair has survived with only a few traces of wear.
