Victorian Splendour

Long Victorian gold earrings, circa 1870

Fancy earrings were a big fashion of the years around 1870. Along with large pendants worn on dark velvet ribbons, they represented perhaps the biggest fashion in jewelry. Due to the hair fashion, which dictated corkscrew curls gathered at the nape of the neck or curls piled high on the head, the earlobes were exposed and thus a welcome showcase for a wide variety of jewelry designs. The present pair starts with a hemisphere from which a disc surrounded by concentrically arranged crescent shapes dangles from an ornate bar. The earrings glow with an additional fine gold plating in rich yellow gold and swing with the wearer's every movement. For all their size, they are very light and therefore very comfortable to wear for long periods of time, as they are made hollow, typical of the period. Contemporary photographs show ladies wearing similar earrings with their day dress. A beautiful, unusual pair of drop earrings from a period that was particularly rich in earring designs - before fashion changed shortly afterwards to favour small dormeuses or even naked earlobes.
