Long Victorian Gold Earrings, Great Britain circa 1870 & later
The reign of Queen Victoria was perceived by the inhabitants of the British motherland as the Golden Age. Jewellery was for the first time affordable for broader classes and was displayed with great pleasure. In the years around 1870, for example, fancy earrings were a particular fashion. Alongside large pendants worn on dark velvet ribbons, they were perhaps the most typical accessory in the field of jewellery. The hair fashion, which dictated corkscrew curls gathered at the nape of the neck or curls piled high on the head, left the earlobes exposed. Soon a wide variety of earring designs emerged, from simple gold beads to rocking birdcages of precious metal. Long and pendulum-shaped, the present pair also takes its cue from these designs - but they were probably not always earrings, and were apparently later assembled from various elements of the period. Presumably the central parts were once parts of an antique brooch. The elongated design culminates at the bottom in a twisted basket of gold wire, to which a hollow ball is attached. Practical hooks make it easy to put on the earrings. We were able to discover the pair in England, where it was created.
