Long Victorian gold earrings, circa 1870

The earrings here correspond in their impressive size to the fashion of the years around 1870. Bright golden and as long as possible, the earrings should also be daytime. Since the hair was ondulated into corkscrew curls and gathered at the nape of the neck, the earlobes adorned in this way were also shown off to excellent advantage. In the 1880s and 1890s, on the other hand, it was suddenly considered ungentlemanly to wear long and striking earrings during the day, and the earrings that had just been fashionable were consigned to the back of the jewellery box. It is thanks to these changes in fashion that the earrings presented here have survived without flaw. The long pendants are made up of three parts: Beneath the practical hoops is a large, openwork decorative element. A long pendulum completes the creation. Earrings of this kind were created in small manufactories from ever new combinations of similar elements. This made it possible to present the customer of the time with a large selection, and yet the production remained affordable for the goldsmiths. Also, the wearer did not run the risk that her friends would wear the same earrings as she did. Since the earrings of the period around 1870 were often very long, they were usually made hollow. Thus, this pair is also extremely light and comfortable to wear, despite its length of more than six centimeters. The pair lives from the movement and play of light on the differently designed surfaces. We discovered the earrings in London.
