Luxurious platinum ring with emerald & diamonds, around 1930

It is often the craftsmanship that is so admirable in antique jewelry. The best pieces exhibit a finesse and attention to detail that can only be owed to hours of meticulous handwork and years of experience. This attention to detail extends not only to the visible face, but also to those parts of the jewel that remain hidden from the eye at first glance. The present ring is such a jewel, dedicated to this high level of luxury. First of all, it is the face of the ring that captures the eye: A luminous green emerald is set here in a bed of platinum, surrounded by a wreath of white diamonds in a millegrain setting. But the side and bottom views of the ring have also been executed with the same high standards of quality. The gemstones sit on a basket-shaped base, which is decorated with the finest openwork. The ornamentation plays with heart and leaf shapes through which light reaches the gemstones. Towards the lower end of this gallery and up to the gemstones, the two-part ring shoulder, also set with diamonds, swings. What appears at first glance to be a typical, straight-lined jewel of the Art Deco era thus reveals an almost sculptural quality at second glance. The use of solid platinum also pays tribute to the high quality of the ring, as this was the most expensive precious metal at the time of the jewel's creation - and, moreover, had not been processed for very long. It was not until the turn of the century that European goldsmiths learned to work with this figurative yet idiosyncratic metal. The fact that some of them achieved such mastery of the material in a comparatively short time is all the more impressive. The ring is excellently preserved. We were able to discover it in Great Britain.
