Elegant Biedermeier

Antique foam gold earrings with black enamel & pearls, circa 1850

The beautifully preserved earrings presented here show in a typical manner some peculiarities of Biedermeier jewellery. Made in the years around 1850, the two-piece earrings each present two ornamental elements of round basic form with plastic agraffes as the upper end. Black enamelled decorations are placed in the middle, the enamel blossom of the lower parts is set with a shimmering pearl in each case. A stylized belt, effectively embossed into the gold plates, forms an additional decorative element here. Movable suspended gold balls at the bottom and simple earwires at the top complete the beautiful design. The pair is made in so called foam gold technique: Gold was expensive after the long Napoleonic Wars, but the need for eye-catching jewelry was great, which stimulated the ingenuity of jewelry makers. Wafer-thin sheets of gold were beaten over steel moulds into voluminous shapes, which were then filled with resin to prevent rapid denting. This resulted in jewelry that used as little expensive gold as possible while still looking impressive and high quality. It almost seems like a small miracle that these earrings, made using the technique described above, have survived the passage of time unscathed. The pair found its way to us in Stuttgart.
