Nostalgic gold ring with red coloured stones, Birmingham 1920
Glass as an adornment of colourful shining jewellery has been known since antiquity. In the 18th century, the joy of the sparkle of this material reached a temporary peak: in 1734, Georges-Frédéric Stras in Paris had developed a particularly sparkling variant of this glass, which quickly spread. The "rhinestone" still known today was born. As a substitute for real jewels it was used for travel jewellery. But especially glass pastes in powerful, unique colors, which could not be found in nature, were considered jewels of their own right in the 17th and 18th centuries - also because gemstones were much more difficult to obtain than today, with our globalized markets. Then in the early 20th century, this tradition revived. In England in particular, jewellery manufacturers produced designs which, although made of silver or gold, set glass stones in the colours of sought-after gemstones. Thus fashionable pieces of jewellery, which at first sight could hardly be distinguished from real jewels, were affordable even for ladies with a smaller purse. This ring made of high-carat gold, for example, features three faceted glass stones that shine in the colour of particularly fiery rubies. Two small slivers of diamonds are set between the stones. Thanks to the full hallmark inside the ring's band, the ring can be dated to 1920, when it was presented to the Birmingham Board of Surveyors. It has survived the century since then superbly.
