Flowers of the Belle Époque

First class natural pearl & diamond stud earrings, France circa 1900

To achieve lasting beauty, no excessive effort is necessary. Daring to do exactly what is necessary and no more usually makes the more lasting impression. As in the case of the precious diamond and pearl stud earrings here, which present themselves in the classic shape of the flower. A large, warm white natural pearl shimmers in the center of both earrings. A frame of more than three and a half carats of diamonds surrounds the pearls and complements the warm luster with a radiant sparkle. The diamonds are set in platinum, whose cool colouring completes the triad of tones, the common sound of the different types of white. The clever design really makes it seem as if each of the stud earrings is a small white flower. Their beauty and brilliance first shone about 120 years ago, when the latest fashions called for white jewels. By using platinum, which had only recently become workable, the arguably French goldsmith was able to give the ear studs the cool, festive glow they still exude today. His masterly treatment of the surfaces with fine mille grips and as fine settings of the diamonds as possible gives the ear studs an admirable delicacy to this day. Since their creation in the years of the turn of the century, the ear studs have always been cherished and well preserved - and yet at some point in the last decades they were once adapted to the new times. For the stud earring and the hinged hoop do not date from the years of the Belle Époque. With their addition, however, the precious ear studs are now reassured and comfortable to wear. An independent valuation report on the ear studs has confirmed the quality of the materials and is, of course, supplied with the earrings.

In the years shortly before 1890 there was a true revolution in the field of jewellery. The excess of historicism in form and colour appeared to be no longer in keeping with the times throughout Europe. Increasing mechanization, also in jewelry making, had repeated the same forms over and over again until they had finally become interchangeable and arbitrary. The jewellers feared for their existence: jewellery sales were declining rapidly, a new fashion was not in sight! At the beginning of the new decade the crisis was overcome. White jewels were the solution, and they quickly caught on. Instead of many poorly combinable pieces of jewellery, ladies now concentrated on a few, but all the more high-quality objects. They were united by their common colour: white diamonds and pearls shone in settings of silver, later platinum and white gold. The designs are filigree and completely restrained in their formal language. Leaves, tendrils and light geometric shapes suddenly dominated the picture, which until just now had been populated by putti in large numbers. The earrings presented here are fine examples of jewellery of this new fashion, which remained current into the first years of Art Deco.
