Snow White's Dream

Wonderful vintage earrings with rubies & diamonds, around 1980

Surely you know the fairy tale of Snow White: It's about a queen who sits at her window one winter's day, sewing. She accidentally pricks her finger with a needle and three drops of blood fall into the snow. She then wishes: "If I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood". Her wish comes true, and she has a daughter who is named Snow White because she has fair skin and red cheeks. In 1812, it was first published in the Brothers Grimm's Kinder- und Hausmärchen. Even in those days when the fairy tale was published - known to us as the Biedermeier Era and in English-speaking countries as the Georgian Era - ladies liked to wear large colored stones, framed by a wreath of diamonds. They were usually worn as rings, but other jewellery also featured this design. This classic genre of entourage jewellery has lost none of its popularity since the early 19th century, as this exquisite pair of earrings impressively demonstrates: Created in the years around 1980, these elegant earrings each present a rose-red ruby cabochon at their center, framed by a wreath of ten white brilliant-cut diamonds. The diamonds in this pair have a total weight of around 1.60 ct and complement the magnificent rubies with their stellar brilliance in the most advantageous way. They are set in high-carat white gold, which is quite restrained and provides an almost invisible hold for the stones. The practical hoop hoops make the earrings easy to put on and comfortable to wear. We were able to acquire three pairs of the same earrings from a store liquidation in Zurich. One of the pairs is presented here. It is unworn and a decorative ear jewellery with a long tradition.
