What remains is love
Magnificent medallion in yellow gold with natural pearls & diamonds, 1870s
Paris was the cultural center of Europe in the second half. The reign of Napoleon III. (1852 to 1870), which went down in history as the so-called Second Empire, transformed the city as no epoch had done before. The radical transformation of urban space under Baron Haussmann placed Paris at the forefront of the avant-garde; the city and became the admired model emulated by numerous other cities around the globe. Parisian taste also set the style in fashion and jewellery. In the 1870s, oval medallions of rich, high-carat gold were particularly popular here. They could hold mementos of loved ones, small letters, pictures, or a lock of hair, for example. This particularly elegant medallion pendant in 18-karat gold, which we discovered in Paris, also dates from this period. The piece of jewellery shines in the matt shimmer of a rich, additional fire gilding, just as it was popular at the time. The front is adorned with a large cross of natural pearls (oriental pearls / half pearls) and fine rose-cut diamonds. A large diamond rose is set into the back, making the piece of jewellery even more precious. Inside, behind two small frames, for example, your own photographs can be safely stored.
The 19th century, with its numerous upheavals and social upheavals, also with a focus on the family, produced a great variety of jewellery designs. Jewellery with picture medallions for portraits or curls of a loved one were classic pieces of jewellery in the culture of remembrance, they were pledges of interpersonal affection.
