Far from everyday life

Antique pendant with miniature painting in red gold, around 1790

An easy, carefree life in the countryside, as a carefree shepherd or cheerful shepherdess - this was the dream of aristocrats towards the end of the 18th century. Romantically transfigured, the world of the simple country folk seemed to them a natural antithesis to life at court with its rigid hierarchies, intrigues and strict corset of rules. In order to be able to live this fantasy in a manner befitting their status, the nobility often resorted to the most expensive means. The Count of Brühl, for example, had a precious centrepiece in the shape of a village made from Meissen porcelain. Marie Antoinette even had a real village built in her garden, complete with peasants - specially hired to assist the queen in her pastoral play on informal days. Needless to say, however, the interiors of the idyllic farmhouses were luxuriously appointed. And here, too, in the present pendant that once adorned the neck of a wealthy lady, the fantasy of shepherd life only comes alive when set in gold. As in the shepherd's novel of the time, this painted scene has a romantic component. A young woman, a shepherdess, stands by a fence, feeding two little sheep. A young man leans over the railing to look her in the face; shyly, however, she turns her gaze downward, recognizably smiling. The scene has been captured here in fine brushstroke on leg. Reddish gold sets the pendant in the typical pointed oval shape of the time, which also characterized rings and brooches. The pendant is beautifully preserved. Even today it offers its viewer a short break - far away from the grey of everyday life.
