A day by the sea
Fancy vintage necklace of silver, pearls & opal, Helmut v. Kleist, Worpswede circa 1975
Worpswede has long been known for its artists' colony. The goldsmith who made this imaginative necklace, Helmut von Kleist (*1943), was also based there for a long time. Here von Kleist uses a beautiful large opal from Australia in an unusual way and creates a two-part necklace: A strong silver chain first holds a bow, which forms a curl in the middle. A drop-shaped cultured pearl fills the gusset between the bow and the curl. Attached to it is a large pendant that can also be worn alone, as it can be removed. The natural opal set into it shows a striped pattern with dark blue, green and light blue zones reminiscent of seawater. Kleist combines the blue opal with drop-shaped pearls and sets it effectively in silver. The luxurious metal thereby takes on coiled shapes reminiscent of approaching waves on the beach. The slight transparency of the large opal adds to the visual depth of the jewelry. The type of setting, as well as the ornamental hallmarking of the silver on the bow, loop and back, is typical of Helmut von Kleist's designs, which the artist himself calls "Kleist jewellery". In its powerful, three-dimensional design, the changeable necklace is a fine example of the artist's jewelry of the second half of the 20th century, and looks like a sculpture that can be worn on the neck.
