Splendid stick pin with 1,45 ct old cut diamonds in platinum, around 1910
Jewellery in elegant, cool and noble white - that has been the dream of jewellery designers since the late 19th century. But the technical possibilities put a stop to this dream for some time. Diamonds were available, but the tricky part was finding the right metal. At first, only silver was available to create white jewelry from, but the metal tarnishes and can leave discolorations on skin and clothes. Then, from the years around 1900, platinum was increasingly used, but its great hardness made it costly to work with, and the metal was even more expensive than gold, so that only the most precious pieces - often made to order - were made entirely in platinum. The present brooch is such a luxury jewel of the time around 1910, which shows itself as a simple, yet in every detail thought-out and harmonious design in ethereal white. A total of eleven old-cut diamonds weighing a total of approximately 1.45 ct, framed by a further 120 diamond roses, display an unusually beautiful colour and purity for the period in which they were created, with a flashing fire, and demonstrate the high quality standards with which the piece of jewellery was executed. The brooch is a so-called stick pin, which was particularly popular in the early years of the 20th century. Here the shape has been varied in a slightly illusionistic way in that two cross ribbons seem to bind the slender form together at two points. Executed in the highest quality materials and finest craftsmanship, the pin is a timeless jewel that has not lost its appeal in the more than 100 years since it was made.
