Passing on the fire
Splendid men's ring with 3,30 ct brilliant solitaire in gold, around 1970
Even for us as professional dealers of antique and vintage jewellery, it is rare to find gentlemens’ rings that make use of such precious materials as the one presented here. A large, white brilliant-cut diamond of approx. 3,30 ct is presented as a solitaire in this ring. Through its sheer size, the diamond’s brilliance and fire are especially pronounced, seeing as the reflective facets are correspondingly large. The diamond is placed into a domed band design of massive yellow gold, and set flush to the surface of the ring. Thus it references its historical inspiration: The so-called 'gypsy rings' of the Victorian era, which made these settings hugely popular in the second half of the 19th century. It’s a well-known fact that Victorian art and design enjoyed a new spike in popularity during the late 1960s and 1970s – however, here we find this setting re-interpreted in a modern way. The surface of the ring is structured in a way reminiscent of sun-lit rocks or shining scales, and like the diamond itself plays a game of light and reflection. This type of surface structuring is typical of fine jewellery designs in the years around 1970. It presents a modern break with too-polished aesthetics, all the while rendering the craftsmanship of the goldsmith visible to the naked eye. Combined with the Victorian inspiration of the setting, the ring is a perfect illustration of composer Gustav Mahler’s famous saying: "Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire."
