Hopeful love

Gorgeous vintage ring with emerald & diamonds, around 1955

Jewellery designs with two juxtaposed gemstones were very popular around 1900, because people loved to play with symbols. This romantic type of jewellery remained popular in the following decades, as this example from around 1950 shows. Symbolically, the two precious gemstones, in this case a green emerald and a white old-cut diamond, depict two people as lovers facing each other on the ring's head. Recognizable as independent elements, yet firmly united by their feelings and symbolically united in one piece of jewelry. Added to this is the symbolic power of the diamond as a symbol of immortality and that of the emerald as a sign of everlasting hope. Isn't this what a happy relationship should look like? The ring, which was created during the years of the economic miracle, was crafted from 14-carat gold and the ring head sets the two stones and eight other small diamonds with elegant sweep in delicate pips. The large diamond weighs about 0.65 ct and is in the old cut - this stone was presumably cut a few decades earlier and was given a second use in this ring. The result is an attractive piece of jewellery that is a lovely treasure, not least because of the combination of high-quality materials and beautiful workmanship. A perfect gift for a loved one!

Rings with delicately curved rails, at the ends of which precious gemstones or pearls are presented, are first encountered in the years around 1900. Inspired by the dynamic forms of Art Nouveau, this jewelry fashion quickly became a great success. No wonder that corresponding designs remained modern until the 1940s, despite all other changes in taste.
