Glowing red

Splendid necklace with almandine garnets & diamonds, around 1860

Red gemstones have always fired people's imagination. In the Middle Ages, long before their chemical differences were recognized, red stones such as garnet, ruby and spinel were grouped together under the name "carbuncle". Such carbuncles were believed to have magical powers and to glow from within. In the medieval novel "Le Pèlerinage de Charlemagne", for example, such a stone illuminates Charlemagne's sumptuously furnished bedchamber as bright as day. Centuries later, in Victorian times, the term was used again to describe almandine garnets cut into cabochons. The present magnificent necklace of that period holds a total of 27 such stones, which shine in deepest glowing red tones. They also appear to glow from within themselves like the magical stones of medieval poetry, yet they have been set closed and backed with foil. Thus, with every movement, it seems as if a fiery red glow glides over the stones. A total of 89 diamonds of about 2.20 ct together accompany the almandine. They are shaped in cushion-shaped historic cuts, which also attest to the age of the necklace. While the almandines are set in gold, silver sets the diamonds. The natural oxidation of the silver makes the stones shine particularly brightly, an effect that was already incorporated into the design by the goldsmith. The necklace is excellently preserved and wearable. It was probably once created in Great Britain, where a veritable fashion for almandine cabochons broke out around the middle of the 19th century and lasted for several decades.
