The colors of freedom
Splendid suffragette necklace with amethysts, peridots & pearls, England circa 1910
Recently, Germany celebrated the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage. Already decided in the November Revolution of 1918, women were able to use their right to vote on a national level for the first time in the election to the German National Assembly on 19 January 1919. But the road to equal rights for men and women was a rocky one, on which much blood and tears were shed. This social change became possible because strong women joined forces and stood up in an organized way against prevailing injustice. Central figures in the struggle for equal rights were the so-called suffragettes (from English/French suffrage, "choice"), radical women's rights activists in Great Britain and the United States who primarily engaged in passive resistance against male domination, even to the point of disrupting official events and public hunger strikes. The suffragette movement was mainly carried by middle-class women who identified themselves by identifying marks such as particular colours of clothing. Jewellery set with precious stones in symbolic colours was also established and served the same purpose. This necklace shines in exactly these colours. We see green peridots, white pearls and violet amethysts united in a colourful, floral and playful garland. The initial letters green, white and violet form a sentence that sums up everything the suffragettes fought for: "Give Women the Vote". This exquisite necklace was made in Great Britain, in the years around 1910. It is designed in gold in the typical British fineness of 9 carats and is in very good condition. It found its way to us in London.
