Let's go - to dance and wine!?
Lapel pin with shell cameo of a bacchante in gold, around 1875
This beautiful lapel pin depicts a figure from classical Greek mythology: rendered in profile, we see a beautiful young lady with a pearl necklace around her neck and a rich ornament of vine leaves and grapes in her hair. The sitter is a so-called Bacchante, i.e. a follower of the Greek god Dionysus, who was famous and infamous for his lavish parties, the so-called "Bacchanalia". The image of the Bacchante in Western art history is strongly influenced by the form that the originally Greek cult took on with the Romans. The Roman Bacchanalia probably originated from spring festivals. At the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. the cult celebrations developed into excessive feasts, which were accompanied by dances and orgies and which took place in secret. In later centuries, bacchants became synonymous with celebrating fun-loving people, but especially with lovers of good wine. An elaborate setting of gold holds the cameo and makes it the showpiece of a pin. The shell cameo, which was created in the years around 1875, has been preserved in its original box. Materials, workmanship and motifs make the pin a beautiful cameo-jewelry for the art-loving gentleman, which on the lapel takes you into the world of classical mythology.
Shells with mythological motifs were created especially in the 19th century in Italy for travellers on a Grand Tour. This so-called cavalier tour, which should perfect the education of the travellers here, led to the antique buildings, into the art collections of Rome and Naples and the early tourists brought small souvenirs from their journey over the Alps, which should tell of the experiences of the Italian journey.
