Antique high karat gold wedding ring from Great Britain, circa 1733
To give away a golden ring as a sign of love and eventually marriage, this tradition goes back to classical antiquity. In ancient Rome, however, usually only the woman wore such a ring - the man went out of the house without this visible sign. In the Middle Ages, the symbol of the wedding ring also found its way into the Christian Church. In 855, Pope Nicholas understood the piece of jewellery as an expression of the bond with the spouse, but also with God: for "just as the ring has no beginning and no end, so the relationship and the covenant with God should last forever." A wonderful example of an antique wedding ring from the 18th century we are now pleased to present here. On the outside, the ring is simple and clear. Inside, however, the ring is engraved in high karat gold like our wedding rings today and bears the initials "MD" followed by a heart. The ring has been marked by its smith; together with the type of engraving, its technique and the workmanship of the ring, the piece can be dated today. Helpfully, the British Museum in London has a large collection of similar rings, which were collected early on as an expression of British cultural history. Here we now find a ring by the same goldsmith "TD", dated 1733. So we can deduce that the ring here must also have been made in those years. We have been able to acquire the ring in the south of England, where it has been kept with much love and care for the past 290 years or so - and still bears witness today to a great, undying love.
