Platinum ring with impressive 1.18 ct diamond solitaire, circa 1910/2019
A diamond is always individual, because no two stones are the same. Every cut, every shade of colour and every inclusion make a large brilliant-cut diamond a unique and one-of-a-kind gift. The large brilliant-cut diamond from around 1910, which we see here in a finely crafted platinum ring from our workshop, presents itself with wonderful light refraction. The stone weighs 1.18 carats, making it a jewel with a charm all its own. Its colour is a slightly tinted white (J), it shows some smaller inclusions (pi) which do not spoil the brilliance. The central diamond is held in a simple claw setting and shows no unnecessary ballast, yet the ring shows beautiful detail with small mille handles. Six smaller diamonds alone, transitioning from the stepped ring shoulders to the delicate rail, accompany it and finish and the ring head harmoniously. The combination of the platinum with the brilliant white of the diamonds is particularly beautiful, adding expressive brilliance. An impressive and classic diamond solitaire that can also be worn daily. The ring makes an ideal gift or a stunning engagement ring.
The symbolic act of giving a diamond ring as an engagement gift is first documented in 1477 and can be traced back to Mary of Burgundy, who received a diamond ring as a promise of fidelity from her future husband, Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. Wearing a ring as a sign of commitment on the third finger of the left hand, on the other hand, was already the custom of the ancient Egyptians, who believed that the "love vein" connected the heart to the left ring finger.
